Our Mission

We champion positive mental health within LGBTQ+ communities by delivering innovative prevention-focussed mental health and wellbeing support - free or at low-cost.

We are committed to prioritising those most in need, with the fewest resources, and those who face discrimination on many levels.

Our VISION

Together, we strive to create a world where everyone feels supported, valued, and empowered to thrive.

Our Story

Queerwell was founded in 2024 by a group of passionate people with lived experiences of poor mental health. People that had experienced professionally and personally the limitations and issues with current mental health support for LGBTQ+ people.

WHY QUEERWELL IS NEEDED

LGBTQ+ people are

  • Significantly over-represented and underserved when accessing support with their mental health
  • More likely to experience poor mental health because of discrimination, rejection by their families and social isolation
  • Likely to receive mental health support which is not informed by an understanding of their specific needs and identities
  • This situation is further affected by long waiting listings, and private alternatives being prohibitively expensive within mental health care
In memory Queerwell Co-founder, Maari Nastari.

In December 2024 we lost our co-founder and Trustee Maari.

Maari Nastari, a trans woman of colour, activist, charity leader and friend was a driving force from day one of Queerwell, and we would never have launched our charity without her strong support and insistence that we did so.

Maari’s legacy is something we will always be proud of and will celebrate.

In her lifetime she helped thousands of lgbtq+ people facing homelessness, abuse and mental health challenges; she worked hard for four LGBTQ+ charities and founded two more through her passion, skills and creativity.

Queerwell will move forward with our work in 2025 in memory of and driven by Maari’s passion to support LGBTQ+ people to overcome the challenges they face.

storiES of hope

When I lost my partner of 30 years, I felt completely alone. Mental health services didn’t understand what it meant to be an older gay man, and I felt invisible, and I couldn’t avoid private therapy. Then I found Queerwell. Their free, LGBTQ+-affirming therapy gave me the support I needed. Now, I’m rebuilding my confidence and finding joy again.

I am a young Black non-binary person; I have faced so much judgment and discrimination—it made me feel like I would never succeed. But when I joined a free group coaching session with Queerwell, I learned how to overcome my self-limiting beliefs. Now, I finally feel partway ready to step into the job market.

I am a trans woman, I often feel unheard—even in LGB spaces—and the negativity online just adds to my isolation. But at a Queerwell Learning Space workshop, I met people of all ages who truly listened to me. For the first time in a while, I felt like I belonged. My only wish? That it lasted longer.

Why QUEERWELL?

1. We address an Urgent Need

We respond to a critical gap in mental health services, particularly for LGBTQ+ individuals. With public and LGBTQ+ sector resources overstretched, we offer timely and specialised support to meet the growing demand.

2. We offer Innovative, Inclusive Support

We provide a unique range of services that recognise the diverse needs of our community. Whether someone is seeking their first step into mental health support or looking for tailored resources, our innovative approach ensures a welcoming experience.

3. We offer Professional & Compassionate Care

Our services are delivered by fully qualified, accredited, and experienced mental health professionals.

4. We are LGBTQ+ Focused and Community-Led

Queerwell is rooted in the LGBTQ+ community. Our work is delivered in queer-affirmative spaces by LGBTQ+ professionals, in partnership with charities, workplaces, and community organisations.

5. We are Accessible Nationwide

We are committed to reaching LGBTQ+ individuals wherever they are. With both online and offline services, we operate across the UK, delivering support in charities, community hubs, and workplaces.

6. We champion Equity and Inclusion

We prioritise accessibility for those who need it most. Recognising that the best mental health support is often unaffordable or unavailable, we focus on reaching marginalised LGBTQ+ individuals, particularly those facing intersecting forms of discrimination.

7. We are sustainable & community-focussed

Our model emphasises sustainability and financial prudence:• A small core team collaborates with specialised providers to deliver key programs.
• Services are hosted within established community settings to reduce costs.
• Our “access and donate” model enables those who can afford to contribute to support free or low-cost services for others.
